Electromagnetic flow meter maintenance

2025-01-06
1. Routine maintenance

Check the electromagnetic flow meter regularly, focusing on the following matters:
  • Check the environment around the instrument, clean up dust and dirt, and ensure that the instrument is free of water and other debris;
  • Check whether the wiring is firm and intact;
  • Confirm whether there is a new strong electromagnetic field device around the meter or whether there is a new wire across the meter;
  • If the measuring medium is easy to contaminate the electrode or deposit or scale in the measuring tube, the electrode and the inner wall of the measuring tube should be cleaned regularly.

2. Rectify the fault

After the electromagnetic flowmeter has been used or operated for a period of time, if it is found that the work is abnormal, external factors should be checked first:
  • Whether the power supply is normal;
  • Whether the pipeline is leaking or not full;
  • Whether there are bubbles in the pipeline;
  • Whether the signal cable is damaged;
  • Whether the converter output signal (input loop of the subsequent meter) is open.
Note: Do not disassemble and repair the instrument blindly.

3. Sensor detection

Required devices: 500MΩ insulation resistance tester, multimeter

Detection steps:

Measuring resistance value:
When the pipe is full of media, use A multimeter to measure the resistance between terminals A, B and C:

The resistance values between A-C and B-C should be close. If the difference is more than 1 times, the electrode may leak or condensed water may be attached in the outer wall of the measuring tube or junction box.
Detect insulation resistance:
When the measuring tube lining is dry:

Use an insulation resistance tester to measure the insulation resistance between A-C and B-C (greater than 200MΩ);
Use A multimeter to measure the resistance between terminals A and B and the electrodes in the measuring tube. In normal cases, the resistance should be connected by short circuit.
If the insulation resistance is very small, the electrode may have leaked and need to be returned to the factory for maintenance; If the insulation resistance has decreased but is still above 50MΩ and the first check is normal, the outer wall of the measuring tube may be damp and can be dried by a hot fan.
Check the excitation coil:

Use a multimeter to measure the resistance between terminal X and terminal Y. If the resistance exceeds 200 ohms, the excitation coil or lead may be open or in poor contact. Remove the terminal board to check.
Measure the insulation resistance between X, Y and C, should be greater than 200MΩ; If the insulation drops, use hot air to dry the inside.
Note: Reduced insulation performance of the excitation coil will lead to increased measurement errors and unstable output signals.
