Explain IP protection levels in detail and give examples

2023-12-04
IP(Ingress Protection) is a class drafted by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) to measure the dust and water resistance of electrical equipment.
The IP protection level is composed of two numbers, the first number indicates the level of dustproof and foreign object intrusion prevention, and the second number indicates the degree of tightness of the electrical apparatus against moisture and waterproof immersion. The larger the number, the higher the protection level.

The dust protection rating (the first number in the IP code) indicates the device's protection against dust. According to the standards of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the dustproof grade is divided into 6 levels, from low to high: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, the larger the number, the stronger the dustproof ability. Among them, the dust protection level 0 means no protection, 1 means to prevent large solid intrusion, 2 means to prevent medium-sized solid intrusion, and so on.
IPOX: No protection
IP1X: prevents the entry of solid objects larger than 50 mm
IP2X: prevents entry of solid objects larger than 12 mm
IP3X: Prevents solid objects larger than 2.5 mm
IP4X: can prevent the entry of solid objects larger than 1 mm
IP5X: Prevents harmful dust buildup
IP6X: completely dust proof
The higher the number, the better the protection. When selecting the equipment, you can choose the product with the appropriate dust protection grade according to the actual demand.

The waterproof rating (the second number in the IP code) indicates the device's protection against water intrusion. The waterproof level is divided into 8 levels, from low to high :0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, the larger the number, the stronger the waterproof ability.
According to the International Electrotechnical Commission (EC) standards, waterproof grades can be divided into the following categories:
IPX0: No waterproof protection
IPX1: prevents vertically falling water droplets from harming the device.
IPX2: Prevent water droplets within 15 "of the vertical direction from causing harm to the equipment.
IPX3: Prevent water droplets in the range of 60 "from the vertical direction from causing harm to the equipment
IPX4: Prevents splashing water from causing damage to equipment
IPX5: Prevents sprayed water from causing harm to equipment
IPX6: prevents the device from being damaged by violent water spraying
IPX7: Prevent the damage to the equipment caused by a short time of soaking in 1 meter deep water.
IPX8: To prevent long-term immersion in a certain pressure of water, causing harm to the equipment.
For example: waterproof grade 7 means that it can resist flooding in a short time (1m), waterproof grade 8 means that it can be used in the environment of the cabin, the higher the number, the better the waterproof performance. When selecting equipment, you can choose products with appropriate waterproof levels according to actual needs.

It should be noted that the waterproof level is not the higher the better, and too high a waterproof level may affect the performance and life of the equipment. In addition, the device must be used and maintained according to the actual application scenarios and specifications.

For example, IP68 indicates that the device has high dust and water resistance. Among them, "6" means that foreign objects and dust are completely prevented from invading, and "8" means that electrical appliances can be immersed in water for a long time under a certain pressure without being damaged.
IP65 protection level: "6" means that foreign objects and dust are completely prevented from invading, and "5" means that electrical appliances can prevent sprayed water from causing harm to equipment.

When selecting a dust-proof and waterproof product, you need to select a proper dust-proof and waterproof level based on the actual application scenario and requirements.

For example, the protection level of vortex flowmeters produced by Aister Instruments in the above picture is IP65.
