The difference between Roots Flowmeter and Turbine Flowmeter

2023-12-06
The Roots flowmeter and turbine flowmeter differ in the following four aspects:
1. Differences in working principle:
The Roots flowmeter is a positive displacement flowmeter whose working principle is based on the mechanical measuring element continuously dividing the fluid into a single known volume portion, and then measuring the total volume of the fluid according to the number of times that the measuring chamber fills and discharges the volume portion of the fluid successively and repeatedly.
Turbine flowmeter is based on the turbine theorem, that is, when the fluid flows through the turbine blade, the turbine blade will rotate, and its speed is proportional to the flow rate, so that the flow rate of the fluid can be measured by measuring the turbine speed.
It can be seen that the turbine flowmeter is a velocity flowmeter, and the Roots flowmeter (that is, the Roots flowmeter) is a positive displacement flowmeter.
2. Difference in accuracy range:
Turbine flowmeters are better at measuring full flow fluids (with large Reynolds numbers) and can measure high speed fluids with an accuracy range of 0.25%.
Roots meters are better at measuring low-speed fluids, with better repeatability and stability, but the accuracy range is relatively small, usually 1%.
In summary: the turbine flowmeter has a large unit measurement error for small gas consumption, and the precision of the Roots flowmeter is more accurate than that of the turbine flowmeter.
3. Applicable fluid difference:
Turbine flowmeter can measure liquid and gas, but the measurement accuracy of gas flow is low, because the gas has problems such as thin, compressibility and adjustment difficulty.
The advantages of the Roots flowmeter are that it can measure gases and liquids, and the measurement accuracy of the gas flow is relatively high, but it cannot measure the fluid with high viscosity or particulate matter.
4. Structural differences:
Turbine flowmeter structure is relatively simple, composed of turbine impeller and sensor, with high reliability and stability.
With more gear boxes and gears, Roots flowmeters are more complex in comparison, so they require higher maintenance costs and maintenance costs.

To sum up, Roots flowmeter and Turbine flowmeter have their own characteristics, in the selection of use, need to be selected according to the actual situation and demand. Turbine flowmeter bearings generally do not need maintenance, and are used more in large units with continuous gas supply or can not stop gas. And Roots flowmeter installation requirements are very high, a little impurities will hinder the rotation of the flowmeter, it is best to vertically placed, can also be balanced installation, but to add more lubricating oil. It is not conducive to the self-cleaning of the flow meter, and it is not promoted in large gas units and units that cannot stop gas.
