Components of A Vortex Flow Meter

2022-07-21
A complete vortex flowmeter consists of four main components: the meter body, the bluff body, the sensing element, and the signal converter. The vortex flowmeter is a new type of flowmeter developed based on the principle of the Karman vortex. It has advantages that other flowmeters cannot achieve and is now widely used in various fields. It is expected to dominate the future flow measurement instruments. The vortex flowmeter is suitable for measuring volumetric flow of saturated steam, compressed air, general gases, water, and liquids. Today, in this article, I will introduce the components of a vortex flowmeter.

1、Connection Types
Based on the connection between the vortex flowmeter and the pipeline, there are two types: flange connection and clamp connection. Each of these connection forms has its own advantages. The flange connection type integrates the instrument and the connecting flange, making installation convenient. However, it increases the workload for the manufacturer, especially when different pressure levels require casting and processing flanges of different pressure levels. On the other hand, the clamp-on vortex flowmeter is relatively lightweight, without bulky flanges at both ends. The valve body can be manufactured without flanges, as long as the sealing surface and mechanical strength requirements are met. Users can choose different pressure levels of flange connections according to different operating pressures.
2、Composition
The structure of a vortex flowmeter consists of a sensor and a converter. The sensor includes a vortex generator (resistive fluid), a detection element (including thermal, strain, capacitive, stress, photoelectric, magneto-electric, ultrasonic elements), and the instrument body. The converter includes a preamplifier, a filtering and shaping circuit, a D/A conversion circuit, an output interface circuit, terminals, brackets, and a protective cover. In recent years, intelligent flowmeters have also installed functional modules such as processors, displays, and communication modules in the converter. These functional modules are installed inside the converter. The vortex generator in the vortex flowmeter is the main component of the flowmeter, and it is closely related to the flow characteristics (meter coefficient, linearity, turndown ratio, etc.) and resistance characteristics (pressure loss) of the instrument.
